The longer 1 1/2" shackle makes this a more suitable padlock for situations where the shorter shackle isn't quite long enough. I'm using it for a thicker gauge chain and it is superior to the standard Master locks I typically use. Unfortunately, I learned the hard way that the laminated casing can crack and break if you drop the padlock onto a cement floor. A disadvantage to ordering this single unit is that if you need more than one, each has a different pair of keys. I use another set of three with the shorter shackles with interchangeable keys for storage rooms but prefer this model. Next time, I'll purchase a multiple package of the 1 1/2" padlocks.

"Great locks, but for a specific purpose.." 2010-07-18

I've been using these locks for about 3 years now and love them. I've since picked up 2 additional pairs and have not had any issues with them. With that said, they're not for everything.

My reason for buying these were to "lock" a backpack or bag up - both for security (keeping others from opening it) and for.. well, security from the bag unzipping itself (which does happen on a loaded bag). One photo backpack, the Canon Deluxe Photo Backpack 200EG for Canon EOS SLR Cameras (Black with Green Accent) is known to do this regularly when filled up, and I'd imagine the last thing you'd want is all your high-end camera gear spilling to the floor (or into someone elses bag!)

Thats where these locks come in - they're priced great, come with a decent amount (4), and have 2 keys. Why the photo shows 4, I don't know.

The 2 keys are coded to all 4 locks, a big plus in my book. The downside is that if you need more locks (from what I can tell) you can't buy them without buying another 2 or 4 pack, which means a different key (my 3 sets all use different keys -- it would be nice to buy another lock if you needed 5, and use just 1 key, but I do see the security risk with them).

These are small locks - about an inch high (including shackle) - I found this to be a plus as the shackle can easily fit into zipper holes, locking 2 zippers together to keep it from opening. These aren't the most secure thing - if someone wants to get past them, they easily can by breaking the zipper or snapping the lock, but it's not something that someone can just unlock - they'd need to fight with it. If thats all you need, this is your item. If you need something super-secure, you might want to look elsewhere. If you just want to keep people from easily opening something, this works great.

The shackle is very easy to open (with the key) and close - a big problem I noticed with these small locks are that other brands can be hard to open - I looked at a few and these were the best I found (they don't stick on you when trying to unlock them, or bounce open when trying to lock them). There may be others out there that work just as well or better, but of the 3 I tried, these were the best and have yet to fail me.

The keys and locks are stylish (as odd as it seems) and very low-profile (I much prefer the silver/black combo to the gold/white or white/red and white/blue - it blends right in on most bags).

With that said, I would like it if Master Lock made these in different colors (or had some way to differentiate them). When dealing with 12 locks (3 sets) and 6 keys total, it's hard to tell which key unlocks which lock. You will end up marking them yourself with a paint-marker, a sticker or duct tape most likely.

Overall, the price is great, the lock is secure and it's easy to use. I highly recommend picking up a pair if you just need to lock up or secure something, and understand it's not some sort of superlock (you probably don't want to lock your bike up with these!)

"Good Cause, So-So Lock" 2010-08-17

I try to buy breast cancer awareness items whenever possible, so I choose this lock over many other available, but I guess I should have looked closer at the design first.

Good:

- Sturdy design. Definitely not flimsy or easily damaged

- Portion of proceeds goes to a good cause

Bad:

- Numbers are annoyingly hard to turn. They are recessed inside the side of the lock and you need to use your nails to turn them. I guess this could be good if you don't need to get in and out of the thing that you are locking very often, but since it is advertised as a backpack lock, I don't think that would be the case.

I am still keeping this lock, but I think I will use it for things I don't need to access all that often, instead of as an everyday lock like I had planned.

These are heavy duty padlocks with standard length shackles. The photo shows the two padlocks with longer than normal shackles. Here are the actual dimensions: Width of Steel Body: 2 inches; Maximum Thickness of Steel Body: 1 1/8 inch; Length of Steel Body Including Rivets: 1 5/8 inch; Length of Key: 1 5/8 inch; Diameter of shackle: 3/8 inch; Width of Throat: 15/16 inch; Maximum Depth of Throat: 1 inch. The padlock has a 4-pin brass tumbler and brass keys. The body and the shackle are plated to resist rust. This is a quality product. The two padlocks are supplied with a total of only 2 keys. I think they should be supplied with 2 keys for each padlock, a total of 4 keys.

In general, I wish the Amazon descriptions of the padlocks included, in addition to the width of the body, the diameter of the shackle and the width and depth of the throat. That would allow the purchaser to make a more intelligent selection.

Maybe this is a fluke, but within a month of use in cold winter weather, the lock began rusting. Without the key, it is extremely difficult to slam the shackle down into the socket. This is the first time I've been disappointed with a Master Lock product. I don't know how it rusted so quickly without regular use.

I wish I could hire Coala Bear to fix my lock for me. I bought this to use on a locker at a health club. I have used it twice, and today when I tried to put it on the locker, it wouldn't close. I kept trying to jam it shut and used the correct combination on it, all to no avail. I also did the reverse of Coala's recommendation, which is to push it hard and swivel the numbers around to try to get it to close, but that didn't work.

Did I accidentally put the arm in the position for resetting the combination as I tried to swivel it around to close it on the locker? I have no idea. All I know is the piece of cr*p doesn't work after two uses.

Buy something else.

PS--I agree this would not fit on any luggage, either. Too thick.

I have 6 of these locks for use on tape cases at work and they are fine. I like them very much. I had no problem setting the combination on any of them and they have worked well for over a year. I also just now tested one of them to see if it would open easily, as mentioned in another review. I pulled pretty hard and I wasn't able to get it to open. I did feel resistance in turning the number dials while I was pulling, but never did the dials hang or show any indication or stopping on the actual combination. I have no complaints about this lock and recommend it for "light" security needs. Anyone with a bolt cutter could cut the hasp, but if you need higher security, you need to pay for a more expensive lock!

Worst lock E_V_E_R.

Pull on the lock, while rotating the numbers. Numbers snap in place while rotating. Takes less than 10 seconds to open this lock, every time, guaranteed.

Master Locks are a laughing joke.

Also check out on youtube, look for "master lock". Quickly, you'll find all sorts of locks that are sooo easy to open. Some of them, like this particularly crappy one, you can open without any tools. Others, like that round one that are so popular in schools, you can open in one second flat using the aluminum cut out of a pop can.

On one hand Master Lock is an utter crying joke, but imagine how many people use them in schools. All those lockers are pretty much open to all those teenagers. No special knowledge about lock picking required. It's sooo easy to do.

Sure enough, as previous reviews have mentioned, this lock was tooo thick to fit through the holes of any suitcase! It was tremendously heavy as well.

It's a great sturdy lock worthy of the Masterlock name.....just don't buy it for your suitcase. You have been warned.

I love the shiny metallic pink of this lock, and also the fact that it is a lot thicker than a normal suitcase lock so harder to cut. These lill' locks worked as expected on a recent trans-atlantic flight. TSA did open my bag (they left a note) but there was no damage to the locks, they obviously opened and then closed these locks as it should have been.

Overall, locks are of decent quality. Please keep in mind that these locks are no differnet from other Master Lock (model 4683q), only differnce is that there is cheap plastic cover on both locks and the keys. If you remove the plastic cover (which I did) they come out exactly same as model 4783 but note than model 4683 cost $10/- for 4 locks where as this locks (at the time of review) is $9/- for two locks. Doing the math, model 4683 is way more cheaper than this model.

If you get what's in the picture (I did) it's a good deal. Hitch lock's a little thin, but I knew that when I bought it. Like the drill-resistant tumbler on the hitch lock. Unfortunately, the ball mount lock doesn't have that feature, but the tumbler is solid brass.

The receiver lock is OK but there is an issue with the hitch lock. It can appear to be locked but is not. After installing the hitch lock, checking it and thinking it was secure, I arrived at my destination with the pin still in place, but the lock had shaken free some where along the 30 mile trip.

A few problems.

I purchased the lock and two sets of override keys.

1) Even though the product photo for the keys shows 2 keys on a ring it really is only one key per order.

2) The key did open the lock for me. I ordered two keys and both would not work.

3) The lock was suppose to come with a "combination change tool". It did not

After reading some of the reviews...I just HAD to comment.

This product works perfectly...it just requires a little common sense.

I bought mine to use on coolers that I take on fishing trips and a large International sized bag.

Some reviews say that you can just resize the strap and slide it off...others say it is hard to reset the combination...others complain about losing them.

I have 4 of them...and the combinations have been reset without any problem.

As far as resizing them: I found the correct width for my coolers and suitcase and simple attached a cable tie around the strap at the right point and it could no longer be moved.

As far as losing them: on my suitcase, I slide it throught the handle and again use a cable tie to hold it in place...and have put a lable on it with my name and phone number....On the coolers, I just drove a screw through the strap and it has held up through many international adventures...with no loss of fresh fish.

What a disappointment. Yes, the strap is easy to adjust and easy to use. But it's also easy to adjust and easy to remove when it's LOCKED! This product is no different than just a plain luggage strap - the lock adds nothing. When it is locked on your luggage, you can grab one of the straps, slide the buckle, and remove the whole thing without even touching the lock. Congratulations to Master Lock for marketing such a stupid product.

Wonderful product idea. Borrowed a hard golf case from a friend but no way to use regular TSA lock. The locking strap looks perfect. Anyway, to the point... what good is a locking strap if I can adjust the size when it is locked and slip it off what ever it is strapped on. Sure, it takes a couple SECONDS. This is nothing but a cosmetic product unless you are going to strap it to something that is around 78-inches so someone can't just adjust the size and get at whatever you thought you were protecting. A more logical version of this would be more like a belt where the lock wouldn't allow any adjustment to the size unless you opened the lock. Learn from my lesson and don't buy this product.

These days, the autromotive industry SUV's and CROSSOVERS are the big sellers. One thing they left by the wayside was a method of LOCKING OUT VALET ATTENDENTS form your glove box, center consoles, etc. There is no truck space, thus nowhere safe to put your stuff when you valet your vehicle. I devised a method where I loosen the center console, properly adjusted this locking strap, and then used a "BUTTONEER" to lock the strap together so the attendent can't loosen the buckle. Then you tighten the mounting bolts of the console and you lock the seatbelt-like lock over the top of the console. It worked!! I realize that the strap could be cut, but that would be so obvious when they return your vehicle. The attendent would surely be confronted. It's a great theft deterrent for this application.

Pros - they are keyed alike. This is a great plus when one needs multiple locks

Cons - they only come with six keys (not twelve). Two of the locks were "sticky" and did not open easily until lubricated with graphite and cycled a few times. One had the same trouble closing. They now all appear to behave as expected.

??? - It remains to be seen if they will hold up to weather as well as the 18 year old ones that they are replacing.

I bought 4 keyed alike Master locks about 10 years ago, MADE IN THE USA. They have been used on gates and sheds for 10 years and have NO RUST at all, and work smoothly. I bought some of these new MADE IN MEXICO Master Locks about a year ago, and now they are rusting and the action is jerky and they have to be fiddled with to open.

Might as well buy the cheap Brinks Chinese ones, the Masters are double the price and not as good anymore... Sad. And I bet the Harvard Business School Graduates that run Master are sitting around pissed off that the cheap Chinese locks are eating their market share. Idiots.

I was a professional locksmith for ten years and sold hundreds of these Master No. 3 padlocks. I still use several that are more than 25 years old. Strong and durable, I've never seen one break. An excellent choice for a locker, toolbox, rural mailbox, shed, etc. As with all but the most massive, covered shackle padlocks, these can be cut with a bolt cutter. In most cases this lock will resist an attack better than the hasp or chain you're using. Especially if used outdoors, use WD40 to lubricate several times a year.

Even though this lock offers convenience in being able to set your own combination, it is very insecure. Once could pull on the lock while spining the number dials to easily pick the lock. In fact, had this lock on my luggage traveling in Asia, and arriving at my destination the lock was missing. Instead, check out the 4-dial combination lock from Brinks. If you pull the lock while spinning the dials, even when you get to the correct combination the Brinks lock won't fall open. Instead, you need to release the tension (stop pulling on the lock), then pull for it to open. So somebody trying to pick your Brinks lock has to go one number at a time vs spining quickly thru an entire sequence of numbers on the Master Lock.

I read reviews and realized it's a flimsy item and not really meant to secure expensive items. I used it to secure a side gate so my 2-year-old couldn't get out. I assumed the gardener and the meter reader guy could simply press the side button to release the cable to enter (code wasn't set). Well, the lock just is too easy to break. Lasted 2 months but I don't completely blame the meter guy. It's just a cheap item. Buyer beware...

This lock never worked right out of the package and I returned it. The part in the body of the lock could not engage the end of the cable due to faulty assembly. It also feels pretty cheap and fragile, like you could smash it to break it, and the cable is thin and could easily be cut. The best use for would probably to lock your luggage in the hotel room so the housekeeping can't get to it, but I wouldn't use this to lock anything in a public space.

On the back of the package, I noticed a small sticker that states "Warning: This product contains one or more chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm. Wash hands after handling." I already opened the package before I saw this. I'm sure it's a fine lock, but I'm afraid to touch it. I'm pretty disappointed that I can't use it. I will try to find someone who wants it for free who doesn't mind the chemicals.

This cable is really thick and nice to use. I've had a good experience using it. Despite the fact that it's so thick, it's still fairly easy to bend and stretch in the way you want to use it (though keep in mind it can never be as flexible as thinner cables). I have not had anyone try to cut it, nor have I tried to cut it, but since it's so thick and it's braided cable, I would imagine that without a torch this would take quite a while to cut even with really big bolt cutters. This cable is very worth the money.

I had one of these on my 7.5 HP Outboard which was on the transom of my fishing boat.

I say "had," because the scumbag who stole this motor pried it off with a tire iron. And from the look of it, there didn't seem to be a whole lot of effort put into breaking it. He was nice enough to leave me the broken lock and the tire iron.

It's been said before that if someone really wants your outboard they're going to figure out a way to steal it.

But I don't think this piece of junk even slowed the thief down.

Mine is "red" I guess (or "purple"), although I'd call it pink. I still can't get over the dial lighting up whenever I turn it. I haven't found a use for it yet, but I still love it. One thing to be aware of though is that the index mark doesn't glow so you have to guess where it is if it is really dark. But that is easy to do because the shackle gets illuminated by the glow of the dial, so you just reckon the pointer to be midway between the two sides of the shackle. These combination lock dials aren't that precise so you can be off by a count and still get the combination right.

I purchased these locks for the gates in my back yard, however, the loops are too thick and will not slide into the gate lock. Beware if you are purchasing these to lock your gates/fences, it may not fit.

I purchased this Backpack lock to help me keep my backpack from sliding around when traveling in the trunk of car. Bungie cords didn't hold up. So far it works pretty good. I just started using it at work in my cube. I feel better about leaving my posessions in my cube while at lunch with the lock attached to my cubicle and backpack. Not that anything has ever been taken - I just feel more secure.

This lock looks like it would at least slow up the grab and dash thief and make them look for an easier target. But any thief that wants your stuff isn't going to let a lock like this stop them.

Combo was easy to set. Cable could be a bit longer.

I was super excited about this lock but as a previous reviewer mentioned, it has a fatal design flaw. It doesn't open very wide so I can't get it around most lockers. It barely fits on the lockers at my gym but I have to maneuver it and fight with it to get it on and off the lockers. Pick something else, maybe they'll redesign this one someday!

It's a very small lock - a little bulky for a backpack but a little small for serious use. The maw only opens a little, it's thin, and there are only three numbers... so it is not a serious lock for high value things. But I found that it (barely) fits the particular lockers in my gym - it is very cute and distinctive, lightweight, and frankly kind of cool and fun. So with that in mind I'm very glad I have it. If my gym locker door latches were even 1/32 of an inch thicker these could not have closed around them and I would have returned them.

It's a funny thing about value packs - why four locks? I guess you can have different locks for different things. I've ordered two sets and both times all the locks were either red or purple. I don't know if that's just chance or if those are the ones that don't sell.

I often have issues with pushing the metal strip of padlocks through the actual locker holes. This lock had a thinner metal strip than my last two padlocks, so it was great to be able to use any locker at the gym, without having to base it around the diameter of the lock hole. It was very easy to set the personalized combination. The only thing I didn't like is that you have to have the lock turned to your combination before you can close it, and sometimes I'll forget to scramble my numbers. My other two padlocks allow you to lock them at any time. It was just something I had to get used to, but wasn't a big issue.

I never succeeded in getting the cable to retract properly. The little clutch thing wouldn't engage. Followed instructions to the letter. Called the help desk at Master Lock and they confirmed that mine was defective. Unfortunately I hadn't saved ordering information to get a refund. I need a lock that will withstand daily use, and may try the next model up.

For our Sunday School and Summer Camp, we wanted a combination lock that allows access to the fridge and snack cupboards to a several selected individuals. A lock with keys would not have worked since we wished to provide access to several individuals. We wanted to keep the kids and hungry adults out. I searched far and wide and even went to our area locksmith. An extensive search finally got me here.

It was easy to set up. The only drawback I have about the product is that it is almost symmetrical with the combinations placed on the top. Individuals can lock it with the backside on the front, thus rendering an asymmetrical combination worthless. Thus, we are using this with a symmetrical combination code e.g., the first and the third digits are the same.

I ordered two of these and got both of the same color. I wish the Amazon warehouse picker would have used his heart and given us the two with different colors.

For our need, this should work out great. I will be buying more of these.

Item arrived on time, in perfect condition.

I use the purple lock at work for my locker. I have never had any problems with it.

I gave the blue one to my sister to use for her locker at the gym.

And I have the red one as an extra.

Two issues with my purchase:

After a few uses, the blue lock became unusable. Something inside the mechanism got stuck and we could not get the lock to close anymore.

Also, ALL THREE OF THESE LOCKS HAVE THE SAME COMBINATION. I imagine this could be an issue of importance to some prospective purchasers.

Count me in as another user that couldn't open the Master lock (#177, same mechanism as #175) after it had been outside for a little more than 1 year (bought it on Oct 2008). Yes, I wrote down the combination and it worked several times before. It was used to secure my circuit breaker box which is on the outside wall of my garage (go figure why the builder don't put it inside!) I only opened it when I had to reset a circuit breaker that was tripped and last time I successfully opened the combo using my written combination is when I had to turn off the breaker to replace my kitchen ceiling light fixtures. I was surprised when I cannot open the lock the other day (to reset a breaker) using the same combination that I have always been using. Needlessly to say I am not happy with the thought of additional expense and inconvenience of hiring a locksmith to open this malfunction lock...

Then I had an idea to look online for help and found out how easy it is to pick this lock if you happen to have the right tools (paper clip or a thin piece of metal). I tried the paper clip method for about 15 minutes and gave up. Then I found a video clip using a thin piece of metal and bingo! The lock opened right up after trying for about 10 minutes... I have never picked a lock before and definitely won't try to pick one that is not mine, and you shouldn't too. This is way too easy even for an amateur like me! I can't believe it! What's the point hardened steel and all these security feature to prevent cutting, prying when all you need to open this lock is a paper clip or a thin piece of metal? This lock's internal mechanism is the same as the Master Lock Model #175 and it looked like this simple lock picking method has been discovered and widely available on the Internet since 2006. I can't think of any good reason why Master can't come up with a new design that can resist this type of picking in 3 years! I definitely won't be buying another Master Lock again!

This is a great lock. Very versatile. I use it to lock up an outdoor storage container that didn't come with a locking tab. Simply drilled a hole through the lid and base then used this long shackle lock to close the two. Only improvement I would like to see is the locking tumbler be located on the face and not the bottom. Can be tricky to turn the key if the shackle is down far below the lock body.

I bought this so I can use it in multiple applications, from locking up my bike to tying down my battery box on my trailer. Being able to tension it to any length (within 6 ft of course) was the very reason I bought it. Most other cable locks are fixed length. This lock has done a great job so far. I've used to lock my kayaks to the roof of my car, lock my bikes onto my car and have wrapped it around a gun case for extra security. It's been absolutely incredible, and at the price you can't beat it.

The only minor downside is the tip of the cable. It's either metal or a hard plastic. I worry about it scratching my car, but if you pay close attention to looping it through the rack, it becomes a non-issue.

I've had my Master Gun Trigger Lock for almost 20 years now, but I had lost 1 of the 2 keys for it and was getting nervous about losing the 2nd key when I came across this.

This is a great price for 3 locks - actually less than what I paid for 1 back then. And it comes with 6 keys that opens all 3 locks, so I'll be keeping 2 around and tuck 4 away in a safe.

It may not work well with all the guns, but they work great with the guns that I want to secure.

Comparing this to my old lock, it appears that it's been beefed up a bit, but the overall excellent design has stayed the same.

After all the glowing reviews for this product, I bought 2 3-packs. They seemed well made and sturdy. These are supposed to be compatible with MOST firearms. Um...that isn't the case. I tried these on 6 completely different firearms. Rifles and pistols. All popular models. Only 1 of my firearms was able to be properly locked with this product (barely). Just trying to get these things to sit right was ridiculous. Save your money and pursue a different product.

Works great on firearms with a fixed trigger guard.

However, on my two lever-action rifles, it's not very effective -- probably no surprise, given the design. On an older Winchester 94, I can get position it to lock the trigger guard and trigger together, with some effort. On a Winchester 9422, it attaches itself to the trigger guard, and it just slides off of the trigger itself when the lever is used. The rifle can be loaded, cocked, and fired with the lock still in place.

"Fit a variety of firearms, good secure protection" 2009-11-29

I bought this 3 pack to secure a variety of firearms. If they are stolen I do not want someone to be able to easily use my firearms to commit a crime. These work great for that purpose.

I am using them on a snub nose revolver, full sized revolver, two different compact semi-autos and a shotgun. I unlock certain firearms at night and lock them up when I leave the house. They definitely do not fit perfectly on any of my firearms, but in all cases they do prevent the trigger from being pulled.

To test this I have put snap caps in each of my firearms and installed the locks. I then try to pull the trigger by pulling back on the lock as hard as I can. None of my firearms will fire with these locks installed. For the revolvers I even tried to cock the hammer manually with the lock installed, and the hammer would not come back. If the hammer was cocked first and then the locks installed the revolvers might be able to be fired by pulling hard on the locks, but this would be a foolish way to store the handguns anyway and so I have not tested it.

The fact they are keyed alike makes them easy to unlock without having to find 3 different keys. In hindsight maybe I should have looked for a larger "keyed-alike" pack, but ah well. Excellent locks and good protection for the price!

I love the 4 number combination because the 4 number PIN I use often so I'm never struggling to remember what the combination is. Sturdy enough for the gym locker and easily recognizable due to different color (mine is bright green). The only thing I hate about it is in order to lock it you must set it to the 'unlock' combination. This doesnt make sense at all.

I would recommend something that you can just press and it snaps shut. I also recommend a lock that I saw on Amazon (sorry dont remember the name) but once you lock that lock and turn the dials in the opposite direction they all turn to 0. Thats a good feature instead of randomly turning your dials randomly

It takes me a total of 15 seconds to crack the combination to this lock. I wish it were harder for someone to crack. I wouldn't trust this lock to secure anything... anywhere... Probably only use it to keep something closed.

I got the locks - I was disappointed I didn't get to choose the color, but I was sent pink ones, which was fine. However, only one of them worked! Despite what seemed like fairly clear instructions on how to set the combination, only one of them actually works with the combination I set. The other one won't lock at all! I leave tomorrow for Australia, and have two suitcases, and am disappointed that I am now going to have to run out and buy another lock, as I don't have the time to order a replacement for these.

I received these locks and tried to program them following the

instructions enclosed. One lock worked fine; the other did not.

I never did get it to work as I could not program it and could not

reset it as per the instructions.

The locks themselves are very small and the numbers are a bit difficult to read - must use reading glasses if you need them.

I returned them for a refund - will try another brand next time.

Haven't actually tried out the locks yet (trip isn't until fall) but I ordered these early so I could have them ready. The shipping was SUPER fast and free which was awesome. And the price you couldn't really argue with (2 for $12 I think). Great deal overall, but I was hoping to have smaller locks so they didn't scream "PARANOID TOURIST" all over my suitcase. The body of the lock itself is 1.5" square and mine are neon orange, wish I could've picked a color but at the same time I don't think anyone will confuse my luggage for theirs now :) another security measure I suppose.

I got one reset to a new number but the other one broke while I was resetting it. Returned them both as I don't want to be overseas with these things. One would think Master locks would be better.
